It Is A Slow Process To Get Back In Shape After Surgery

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

Having a good health comes with a lot of work and physical fitness is part of that. How do you get to the point of being in good shape physically? First up is being active, by that I mean that you don’t sit around on the couch and look at TV all day. Get out of the couch and start moving your body physically.

After I had my last operation I was in a physical state of a 90 year old man.  I mean that my fitness level was at an all time low. I couldn’t live like that for the rest of my life so it was just to pull up the pants and get going.  I knew that it would be a hard fight to get back up in shape again.  After almost two months in bed my body was just bone and skin. Most of my muscle mass had disappeared and the only way to get it back was to get into physical activity again. I’m telling you that those first steps were like moving a ton. I couldn’t walk a hundred yards without having to rest.
Starting my activity in a park with benches along the way was a blessing. I made a goal of making it to the next park bench and have a rest. Having support from my wife and at the same time walking with our two dogs made the whole process a lot easier.

The time it took for me to achieve a relative good physical shape was around 6 months. I got to the point where I could move around without effort in about 4 months. Having a brisk walk for a couple of hours today is no problem at all.

In the event that your body goes through a process like this, the only way out of it is to start moving and I personally found that walking was the best beginning for me. My muscle mass came back and today I feel really good when I have my daily walk.
In closing, please make sure you have enough fluid intake. Water is always the best.
